1959年10月17日，北京电视台（中央电视台的前身）播出《新的一代》，全剧播映70分钟，是当时规模最大、播出时间最长的电视直播剧。编剧高方正，导演王扶林、笪远怀，摄像文英光、王明远、庞一农，主要演员王健、陈铎、邹道语、车轼等。这部向国庆10周年献礼的剧作是中国电视剧史上第一部多场景大型电视直播剧。该剧反映清华大学建筑系中工农出身的大学生，在参加首都“十大建筑”设计中的学习、生活情况，以及他们争为新中国作贡献的先进事迹。全剧场景多、容量大，共有十余个人物，需转换六七个场景，并且横跨三个季节，这给当时的排练与演播带来了很大的困难。为开辟更丰富的表演区域，在当时直播场地较狭窄的情况下，在演播室外的走廊以及与走廊相通的一间屋子内都搭了景；利用16毫米胶片到清华大学、颐和园乃至建筑工地上拍了一些外景，直播时适时地插入，用于回忆、倒叙、转换场景等。（孙宝国《电...
